Welcome

The SLAP was created in 1986 during the XII IPS Congress in Germany, and was encouraged mainly by Dr. Milton Thiago de Mello, distinguished Brazilian primatologist and its first president. The SLAP survived until the early nineties, with Dr. Ernesto Rodriguez Luna, Mexican primatologist, being its last president.

Since then, despite some attempts, the revival of this society, aiming to preserve unity among Latin American primatologists, was not achieved. Therefore, on August 16th 2012, at the IPS Mexican Congress, a new a course of action started, resulting in the Brazilian Congress of Primatology and 2nd Latin American Congress of Primatology being held in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil, from the 4th to the 9th of August, 2013.

The actions considered are listed below:

1. Performance of the II Latin American Congress of Primatology in the XV Brazilian Congress of Primatology.

2. Election of Domingo Canales Espinosa (Mexico) as the Honorary President, until the election of the formal SLAP President at the Association’s General Convention during the Brazilian Congress.

3. Representatives chosen by region:
• Martin Kowalewski (Argentina) for the Southern Cone = Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay
• Andres Link (renato hilario) (Colombia) for the Andes = Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia
• Bernardo Urbani (Venezuela) for the Amazon = Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and the Caribbean
• Domingo Canales (Mexico) for Mexico and Mesoamerica
• Leandro Jerusalinsky and Mauricio Talebi for Brazil
• Links with Brazilian SOC Primatology and the Recife Congress: Leonardo Oliveira Mendes Beltrão Raone

April. - The Honorary President shall submit the proposed governing statutes for the SLAP and a proposal for the organization of the association.
May. – Primatologists, not only of Latin American origins, but all those who, regardless of their nationality, work in New World primates’ habitats, will be invited to participate in SLAP.

These are the main agreements reached at this meeting (Convention).

This is a first invitation to all researchers, students and those interested in the study, management and conservation of New World primates to participate in the SLAP. We look forward to an extraordinary participation, therefore being able to face the new paradigms from American Primatology.

In the coming days, we will be sending the proposal to the SLAP website.

Yours Sincerely

Domingo Canales Espinosa
